The Spring Grove Sawmill Horse Trail is a beautiful horse & wagon trail located in scenic Southeast Minnesota. It is
located just East of Spring Grove and is about an hour drive from Decorah, IA, Rocheaster, MN, or LaCrosse, WI.
The trail runs across privately owned land, is mowed and well-marked, and has some small climbs. It winds through
mostly wooded areas and along some fields. There are scenic overlooks and abundant wildlife and wildflowers along the
way.
The Trail was just re-opened on July 8, 2006 after an extensive renovation. It was widened for horse-drawn
wagon usage and extended to 10.5 miles. Trail signs, mile markers, and a parking lot have been added. The trailhead is
located just East of Spring Grove at the Farmer's Co-Op Elevator.
Season: May - October (trail conditions permitting)
Trail Usage: Horseback riding, horse-drawn wagons, and walking. Day use or overnight
stays on grass area at the trailhead.
***Motorized vehicles are NOT permitted.
Fees/Trail Pass: None
Difficulty: Easy/moderate
Trail Length: 10.5 miles
*There is a marked turnaround point (about 7 miles into the trail) that you may double-back on if you would prefer
not to ride along the road through town during the last stretch of the trail.
Trailer Parking: Parking is available for horse trailers in the designated
lot located at the trailhead. The trailhead is located at the Farmer's Co-Op Elevator just East of Spring Grove
on Hwy 44. There is also a hitching post available.
Facilities: Primitive - no water or electricity. Please bring water for you
and your horses.
*There are several restaurants available in town for dining and gas stations for fuel.
*Horse boarding /training is available at Sundance Stables located just 1/2 miles off the trail. Please
